The Department of Public Safety includes a full-service police department with over 25 sworn police officers. The police officers are licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) with full police authority to enforce laws of the State of Michigan and university ordinances. WMU police officers are granted police powers by the WMU Board of Trustees as well as by the Sheriff of Kalamazoo County.

Community Policing

Many police officers from the Department of Public Safety serve as community police officers and residence hall liaisons within the community. These officers provide programs and services to the campus community throughout each year.
